About me

I am Monika Groth, an author, director and lecturer.

I studied directing at the film school in Potsdam-Babelsberg and worked for German public service television for many years. Since 2001 I have been teaching film and writing to students from all over the world and developing my own projects in film, theatre and literature.

I am interested in stories at the point where they become contradictory: people, their decisions, relationships, dependencies and the question of how something could happen.

With “Hinter dem Fall” I turn this way of looking on to real criminal cases and court proceedings. The focus is on violent crimes against women and on the question of how such acts come about, what precedes them and what they mean for the women concerned. I attend hearings, research the background and write about what emerges between charge, testimony and judgment.

What matters to me is close observation and understanding a case in its human and social dimension.
